The engine is the heart of all vehicles. Be it a car, scooter or motorbike, all vehicles run on the power of their engine power. An engine is made of different motor parts that work together to convert the fuel energy into mechanical force. In doing so, the different parts of the engine come in contact and create friction. Engine oils are important as they help to reduce the wear and tear of these engine parts. 


Drivers can buy the latest models of vehicle from the best manufacturers, but if the engine is not kept in a healthy condition, then it may spoil the overall driving experience. Engine oils help in lubrication of the engine parts, reduces carbon collection on the inside parts, and helps in maintaining a cool engine temperature. All these functions are important. Scooter oil, bike oil, or car engine oil – different types of vehicles use different grades of engine oil. 



There are three types of engine oil available in the market – mineral oils, synthetic oils and semi-synthetic oils. All types of engine oils are made of base oils and chemical additives. Mineral engine oil is made by refining crude oil. Synthetic engine oil is made by finely refining the crude oil and mixing additives like detergents, viscosity index improvers, anti-oxidants and so on. These are well suited for high performance engines and most commonly used as car engine oils. Semi-synthetic engine oil is a type of blend oil that is made by mixing mineral oils with synthetic oils.


One main purpose of engine oils is to collect the heat, varnish and carbons accumulated inside the engine parts. This keeps the engine healthy and prevents it from being subject to rust or any corrosion. As more time passes, the additives in the oil get used up and the oil becomes less like liquid and more like sludge. This is true for scooter oil, bike oil, and also car engine oil. All vehicles need to change their engine oils after every few months to maintain a healthy engine performance.
The primary functions of using engine oil are:

Lubrication: The engine is built of different parts – pistons, valves, and other moving parts. The most important role of engine oil is to provide lubrication to all the engine parts so that friction and wear is reduced. The oil lubricates each engine part that it comes in contact with by covering these parts with a slick film. The oil minimizes wear and tear on these parts. Proper lubrication is needed to keep these parts running smoothly without any hiccup.



Cooling: The engine oil carries the heat away from the motor parts. When the engine is switched off, the engine oil helps in cooling down of the oil pan. This is especially important in car engine oils where the engine is prone to over-heating after travelling long distances. Good quality engine oils help to keep the engine cool. Engine oils with high heat resistance also keep the carbon formation to a bare minimum.

Cleaning: Engine oil plays a crucial role in keeping the engine clean. It cleans up all the engine components it comes in contact with. The additives present helps to clean the carbon collected on the piston and other parts.
